Very Rev. Jonathan S. Toborowsky, VG has been appointed Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Diocese of Metuchen, effective August 1. A native of New Jersey, he was born in Perth Amboy to the late Patricia and Lawrence Toborowsky.
Since his father’s side of the family was Jewish, Father Toborowsky attended Hillel Academy Hebrew Day School, Perth Amboy, through fifth grade and completed his secondary education at Woodbridge High School, Woodbridge. At age 13 he celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. From 1988 to 1991, Father Toborowsky worked in local government as Aide to the Mayor of Woodbridge Township, and attended Middlesex County College, Edison.
After receiving instruction in the Catholic faith, he was baptized in September of 1990, and confirmed in June of 1991. After being accepted as a seminarian in 1992, he enrolled in Seton Hall University, South Orange, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and graduated cum laude. He earned a Master of Divinity Degree and a Master of Arts Degree in theology and Church History from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1998.
Father Toborowsky was ordained to the priesthood May 30, 1998 by Bishop Vincent De Paul Breen. His parish assignments include Parochial Vicar at St. James, Basking Ridge (1998-2003), St. Mary, Alpha (2003-08), and St. Thomas the Apostle, Old Bridge (2008-09). He was named Administrator then Pastor of St. Lawrence, Laurence Harbor (2009-18), and Pastor of Immaculate Conception, Annandale (2018-22), before becoming Vicar General.
In addition to his parochial ministry, Father Toborowsky served as Vicar Forane (Dean) of the Raritan Bay Deanery from 2009-2018. He served as a member of the Presbyteral Council from 2002-2004 and 2008-present; member of the College of Consultors, 2014-present; associate director, Diocesan Office of Vocations, 1999-2001; moderator of Proclaim the Good News, the diocesan radio show, 2003-2007; member of the Commission for Historical Records, 2003-2010. He contributed to the 2005 book Of This We Are All Witnesses: The History of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey, and is also a co-author of the 2007 book John Paul II for Dummies.
Father Toborowsky became an Eagle Scout in 1984. He holds the rank of Knight Commander in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and Knight of Justice and Devotion of the Military Order of the Collar of St. Agatha of Paternò.
