Mount Saint Mary Academy is seeking a full-time School Counselor for the 2022-2023 school year.  The counselor will support the high school’s instructional program and counseling activities consistent with the goals set by the mission and philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy.  This will include counseling a caseload of students, grades 9-12, in their academic, personal, and social development.  The counselor will utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success; work closely with administration, faculty, and staff members; communicate effectively with parents and family members; provide preventive services; and respond to students’ needs.  The ideal candidate will have attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and experience in high school student counseling and personnel work. The candidate should have a master’s degree in the area of school counseling or a related field.  Experience working with students with learning differences, students requiring accommodations, and familiarity with standardized testing accommodations processes is preferred.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 

• Oversee students’ academic progression each year and fulfillment of graduation requirements.
• Support students’ successful transition to the school.
• Support each student’s continued positive contributions and fulfillment of potential academically, personally and socially through her career.
• Instruct and contribute to curriculum for students in grades 9-10 in seminar level classes covering topics appropriate for class level including freshmen success, identifying personal, social and academic strengths, career development, and beginning college exploration.
• Write effective letters of recommendation for summer enrichment programs, community programs, college and scholarship applications.
• Ensure the consistent implementation of academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities and health needs.
• Plan, develop and present at events or informational workshops for families to learn about the department: Freshmen and Sophomore parent/family events, Junior student and parent/family night, Senior student and parent/family night, annual college information night with guest speakers.
• Assist with the coordination and organization of PSAT and PreACT administration.
• Serve on the Student Assistance Committee to best serve students in need.
• Serve on Admissions Committee; review and interview incoming 8th grade applicants.
• Assist Student Assistance Counselor with Wellness Day event and special programs.
• Assist Director of College Counseling / AP Coordinator with college-related events and AP Exam administration.
• Oversee coordination and processes of accommodation requests and plans. Work closely with Somerset County Educational Services for evaluations, reports, and appropriate educational services for students.  Responsible for applications for accommodations for standardized testing (College Board, ACT). Communicate with students and families, counselors, administration and faculty.
• Serve in additional advisory roles for student activities as needed and interested (ie, National Honor Society).
