Parish Coordinator of Religious Education St. Catherine of Siena Parish , Cedar Grove, NJ
General Description: The Coordinator of Religious Education reports to the Pastor and is responsible for the religious education and formation of the parish children from Grades 1 through 8. Included is Sacramental preparation of CCD and Catholic School 2nd Graders for Reconciliation and Holy Communion and 8th Graders for Confirmation. The Coordinator is also expected to be an active member of the parish staff. This position is full-time with a competitive salary and benefits. For the 2019-2020 CCD year, we had 359 students and 25 catechists.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Recruit and train catechists; provide enrichment, encouragement and support
Establish program calendar for registered families and organize registration – mailing forms, processing registration returns and collecting fees
Work closely with the SCS School Principal with regards to use of school building, planning Sacramental celebrations and determining basal and Sacramental texts
Organize classes, set up appropriate classroom space, maintain an orderly, safe, calm and faith-filled environment for learning and serve as substitute catechist as needed
Order and distribute student texts as well as Sacramental texts , purchase supplies and make sure they are always readily available for catechists
Ensure that appropriate records are kept and maintained- attendance, Sacramental celebrations and Confirmation documentation
Supervise and work closely with CCD office assistant
Organize Sacramental parent meetings, provide folders with appropriate information, immediate Sacramental preparation schedules, highlight what parents and students are responsible for and plan the practices and celebrations of each Sacrament
Strive to engage parents in their faith through Sacramental preparation of their children, i.e. Planting Seeds for the Journey, Explained Mass, Bread of Life Retreat, Books & Blessings weekend and encourage them to receive Reconciliation as their children make their 1st Reconciliation
Teach faith-filled discipleship through actions and words
Provide Reconciliation and seasonal prayer services
Qualifications & Skills:
Must be a fully-initiated, practicing Catholic and faith-filled disciple
Must be able to work with children, parents, catechists, parish staff and pastor
Must have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Religious Studies or related field; have a Religious Education certificate or be willing to obtain one
Must have experience as catechist
Must have 2+ years experience in parish Religious Education and formation
Computer skills and organizational skills are essential
Must pass a background check and receive a Protecting God’s Children certificate
