NPM is an organization for anyone who recognizes and supports the value of musical liturgy. It is comprised of choir directors, organists, guitarists, pianists, instrumentalists of all kinds, priests, cantors, and pastoral liturgists. It is made up of members of contemporary ensembles, handbell choirs, and choral groups. Some are young people in high school and college, while some are veteran directors of music ministries. NPM fosters the art of musical liturgy. The members of NPM serve the Catholic Church in the United States as musicians, clergy, liturgists, and other leaders of prayer.
The Metuchen Chapter of NPM hosts numerous events throughout the year, helping local church musicians to grow in faith and skills. The Chapter was named “Chapter of the Year” in 2016.
Date/Time: Saturday, July 23 from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Presenter: Rev. Msgr. Joseph G. Celano
Location: Immaculata H.S. Cafeteria and Media Room
Cost: $30
This retreat will offer pastoral musicians an opportunity to be refreshed in our faith and renewed in our ministry.
The pandemic has caused many in ministry to become weary and to feel a sense of loss and lack of direction. How can we, as musicians and leaders, strengthen our own faith so that we can continue to minister and lead while addressing the many challenges before us? Come share in the faith with other musicians, as Msgr. Celano leads us in prayer, discussion, and reflection.
May the day be healing and reaffirming for all of us!

Music Minister Jill Szabo died on November 30, 2021. Jill was an active Music Minister at St. Matthias for over 40 years. She sang in the Children’s Choir when she was at St. Matthias School. During her high school years at Mount St. Mary’s, she played piano and flute and sang in the Folk Group. After attending Providence College, she returned to accompany the Folk Group and then started a teen choir, The Archangels, specializing in Christian contemporary music. Later it became Revelation, an intergenerational choir.
Jill assisted Music Director Joan Best Seamon and other members of the Music Ministry Leadership Team in every aspect of liturgical and choral planning. She ministered weekly at Masses, weddings, funerals, and provided music for every Baptism at St. Matthias for over 20 years. Every year on Christmas Eve, Jill combined the Revelation Choir with the Filipino American Association Choir of St. Matthias to provide a unique experience of traditional Christmas Filipino Music at the 6:30 p.m. Christmas Eve Mass. Jill’s musical leadership at the combined choir celebrations of the Triduum was exemplary.
