KENDALL PARK – In a heartfelt tribute to the exceptional dedication and sacrifices of Catholic school educators, the Diocese of Metuchen officially began the new academic year honoring the individuals who have made the most difference in our local communities - its teachers.
"As teachers in Catholic schools, before anything else, each one of us is called to represent Jesus, the teacher. That is our primary mission as a teacher in a Catholic school. This is certainly your high calling, and one we profoundly appreciate you for embracing," said Metuchen Bishop James F. Checchio at an August 30 Mass for Diocesan Teachers, which was held in St. Augustine of Canterbury Church.
Recent findings from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the “Nation's Report Card,” have shown that Catholic schools continue to excel academically. This success is a testament to the dedication and sacrifice of Catholic School teachers. Their commitment to providing quality education, grounded in faith and values, has consistently yielded impressive results, showcasing the profound impact of their work on students' academic achievements.
Teachers, especially within Catholic schools, are true beacons of selflessness and devotion, often going above and beyond to provide students with an exceptional education. Stressing the importance of Catholic education’s role in developing a relationship with Jesus Christ, Bishop Checchio stated, "Together we must show our young people something different, something more than the world has to offer them. His invitation to a deeper, lasting friendship with Him changes everything." Reflecting on the powerful connection to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the founder of Catholic schools in the United States, Bishop Checchio continued, “That is our mission. That is our job to teach like Jesus. My dear teachers, I certainly want to thank you for doing this for our young people. Where would we be without you? Where would our youth be? We know our youth need this kind of witness and guidance to have a grounding for the rest of their lives, that they have Jesus with them.”
In Central and Western New Jersey, Catholic school teachers play an indispensable role in shaping the future leaders of tomorrow, instilling in them not only knowledge but also compassion, empathy, and a strong moral compass. Catholic school teachers often make personal sacrifices to ensure that their students receive the best education and spiritual guidance. These sacrifices provide a testament to their love for their students and their unwavering commitment to the values of Catholic education.
“Our world needs this, our country needs this. We need to have youth who know Jesus, who love Jesus, and who let Jesus into their lives because it changes everything," Bishop Checchio expressed with gratitude. "And we need change. Your efforts make a difference and are noted and appreciated by so many. We can't say thank you enough."
Barbara Stevens, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Metuchen, shed light on the significance of today’s Catholic education in New Jersey. "Over the past few years, we've witnessed a significant increase in enrollment in our Catholic schools. This is a testament to the trust our communities place in our schools and the quality education and guidance our teachers provide," Stevens remarked. "Catholic education prepares our students not only academically but also spiritually for a world that needs future stewards. Often lacking these essential values in our communities, our schools stand as beacons of hope in gratitude to those who dedicate their daily lives to teach like Jesus.”
