The recent string of mass shootings over these past few months, the latest of which occurred earlier today in Austin, Texas, has been a tragic reminder of the many lives lost to gun violence over the years and a jarring reminder of the long road ahead as we work towards peace.
On this same day five years ago, 49 people were killed and 53 injured in the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, in what was then the nation’s deadliest mass shooting, a record that would sadly be surpassed only one year later by the mass shooting in Las Vegas.
I ask that you please join me in praying for peace, for an end to the senseless violence plaguing our nation. Please also remember in your prayers those who have died as the result of gun violence, their families and loved ones, and all those still suffering from the pain and trauma of these attacks. We pray too for anyone considering violence as means to an end, that they may be reminded they are children of God, created in His image and likeness, and can endure any difficulty in life with His help.
As we endure these tragic days in our nation, we entrust our intentions to our Blessed Mother, whom we share a special devotion to today on this Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Yes, her heart is full of love for her Son and for us too, her children whom she cradles in the joyful moments of life and in the tragic moments too. May she protect us and be near to all who are suffering.
