The Catholic Spirit, the official newspaper of the Diocese of Metuchen, is presently seeking an Editor-in-Chief to work within the Secretariat of Evangelization and Communication to oversee the production of the monthly periodical.

Among other things, the Editor-in-Chief will:

• Plan, direct, and coordinate the conception, production, and distribution of The Catholic Spirit in both its print and online forms.

• Initiate and respond to ideas for articles according to editorial policy.

• Establish and oversee schedules for all stages of publication.

• Ensure the production of the newspaper within specified budget and deadlines.

• Initiate or reply appropriately to correspondence regarding material published or being considered for publication.

• Direct copy editors, production editors, writers, researchers, graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, and printers.

• Write or direct the writing of articles, stories, editorials, headlines and captions.

• Attend major events and write corresponding news stories.

• Rewrite or direct the rewriting of copy, headlines and captions to clarify meaning and to conform to the newspaper’s style and editorial policy.

• Schedule and direct freelance writers and photographers.

• Collaborate with the Office of Communications and Public Relations in maintaining the newspaper’s website.

• Write key communications for the Bishop of Metuchen and other executive leaders, as needed, including stakeholder letters, media statements, announcements, talking points, spoken remarks and video messages.

• Interact with executive leadership, including the Secretary for Evangelization and Communication, maintaining their trust and confidentiality and providing counsel and strategy on key messaging.

• Develop communications programs as needed or requested; Develop and execute multi-platform media campaigns highlighting key initiatives, events and messages.

• Cultivate engaging, meaningful, mission-oriented content for social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and others as required.

• Highlight the good works of the diocese and its partners and to obtain positive coverage of diocesan programs, services, and events.

The Editor-in-Chief must be a practicing Roman Catholic who upholds the teaching and traditions of the Catholic Church, and who possesses a strong working knowledge of the Catholic faith and Church hierarchy.

A degree in journalism, communications, or related field of study, is preferred but not required.
