Statement of the Catholic Bishops of New Jersey on the Passage of the Freedom of Reproductive Choice

The Catholic Bishops of New Jersey join to express our profound disappointment and deep concern about the passage of S49/A6260 - - the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act, which codifies into state law an individual’s right to an abortion, including late-term abortions. This law departs from the fundamental Catholic teaching that all life is sacred from conception to natural death. Even more distressing is that the legal and ethical calculus that underlies this new legislation absolutely and forthrightly extinguishes the human and moral identity of the unborn child. Perhaps the legislators who rushed through this Act in the waning moments of their terms did not want citizens to understand fully its inhuman and lethal consequences.

We have failed as a society when a response to any pregnancy is fear rather than joy. Sadly, too often this fear is born out of the mother’s uncertainty she will not be able to provide for herself and her child the resources necessary to live a flourishing life. We must do better. Therefore, we urge all Catholics and people of good will to actively participate in breaking down the economic, employment, social, racial, and emotional barriers that lead mothers into thinking that abortion is a better option than life. 

For our part, the Catholic Church is committed to broadening and increasing awareness about the abundant resources and programs we offer that include life-affirming health and prenatal care, emotional support, assistance in bearing and raising her child, and basic needs such as housing, food, and clothing to pregnant mothers seeking or considering alternatives to abortion.

Declaración de los obispos católicos de Nueva Jersey sobre la aprobación del proyecto de ley en Derecho a la libertad a la elección reproductiva 

Los obispos católicos de Nueva Jersey nos unimos para expresar nuestra más profunda decepción y enorme preocupación sobre la aprobación del proyecto de ley S49/A6260, la Ley a la libertad a la elección reproductiva, que codifica en norma del estado, el derecho de un individuo a un aborto, incluso a los abortos tardíos. Esta ley se aparta de la enseñanza católica fundamental de que toda vida es sagrada desde el momento de la concepción hasta la muerte natural. Aun más angustioso es el hecho de que el cálculo jurídico y ético que sustenta esta nueva legislación, extingue absoluta y rotundamente la identidad humana y moral del niño no nacido. Quizá los legisladores que se precipitaron a aprobar esta Ley en los tiempos menguantes de sus términos, no querían que los ciudadanos comprendieran por completo sus consecuencias inhumanas y letales. 

Hemos fallado como sociedad cuando la respuesta a cualquier embarazo sea miedo en vez de alegría. Tristemente, muy a menudo este temor surge de la incertidumbre de la madre, en que ella no podrá proporcionar para ella ni para su hijo, los recursos necesarios para vivir una vida próspera. Debemos hacerlo mejor. Por eso, nosotros impulsamos a todos los católicos y personas de buena voluntad, a que participen activamente rompiendo las barreras económicas, laborales, sociales, raciales y emocionales que llevan a las madres a pensar que el aborto es mejor opción que optar por la vida. 

Por nuestra parte, la Iglesia católica se compromete a ampliar y a aumentar el conocimiento general de la comunidad sobre los abundantes recursos y programas que ofrecemos como Iglesia, que incluyen un cuidado prenatal y de salud optimistas, apoyo emocional, asistencia para dar a luz y criar a un hijo y las necesidades básicas tales como vivienda, alimentación y vestimenta a mujeres embarazadas que busquen o consideren alternativas fuera del aborto.
