Diocese of Metuchen plans special collection to aid in hurricane relief efforts

PISCATAWAY – As the people of the Bahamas begin to recover and rebuild after Hurricane Dorian left the islands reeling from the devastation, the local Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen is working to raise funds that will aid in the long recovery process.

Bishop James F. Checchio has authorized a special collection at all parishes in the Diocese of Metuchen the weekend of Sept. 14 and 15, to aid in this disaster relief effort and any future disasters that may require assistance and support.

“Our brothers and sisters in the Bahamas are in great need,” said Bishop James F. Checchio. “This devastating storm claimed the lives of countless victims, left thousands without access to food, water and necessary medical supplies, and caused many to lose their homes and livelihoods.”

Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 storm that brought catastrophic winds and storm surge, struck and hovered over the islands of the Bahamas for nearly two days, leaving massive devastation in its wake.

“I ask all people of faith and good will to join us in praying for the people of the Bahamas as we come together to offer our support, generosity and Christian charity,” said Bishop Checchio.
