Statement from Bishop James F. Checchio on
Rev. Thomas Ganley's court appearance to enter a plea
Upon hearing the news of Fr. Thomas Ganley’s appearance to enter a plea today, Bishop James F. Checchio of the Diocese of Metuchen said:
“My heart aches for this survivor and all survivors of child sexual abuse. The crimes and sins committed at the hands of a priest – someone who is supposed to provide spiritual care – are shameful and disturbing. This is a painful and horrific crime and sin. As a Church, we are committed to facing these situations with transparency, faith and hope. We must live in the light and continue to work to better understand this horrendous chapter in our history ensuring that we never return to it, eliminating the darkness that has been created around it. Today, I am praying particularly for the survivor and I remember in my prayers daily all those who are survivors of child sexual abuse as well as those affected by it. I ask that all our faithful join in this prayer.”
