Disaster Relief

UPDATE:

September 13, 2017 – In light of the recent natural disasters that have affected so many in the southern region of the United States and in Mexico, Bishop Checchio has advised that the optional second collection taken on September 16-17, originally intended to assist in the relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Louisiana, also will be used to assist with the relief efforts for Hurricane Irma in Florida and the deadly magnitude-8.1 earthquake in Mexico.

Please give generously, as your means allow, to help our brothers and sisters who are most in need at this time.  And please continue to pray for all hurricane and earthquake victims, especially for the deceased and for families who have lost a loved one.

UPDATE:
October 12, 2017 – Bishop Checchio extends his thanks to all who have responded with extraordinary generosity to our brothers and sisters in great need. In the wake of the recent hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (Maria), Florida (Irma), Louisiana and Texas (Harvey), and the deadly earthquakes in Mexico, Bishop Checchio has asked that the diocesan-wide Disaster Relief Collection, originally intended to close September 30, be extended to support the relief and recovery efforts in the affected communities. The Diocese will accept donations through Thanksgiving Day, November 23. All monies collected will be used to assist victims of these recent natural disasters, working with local Catholic relief and recovery agencies in the affected regions. Give online today at http://diometuchen.org/ways-to-give/disaster-relief or write a check made payable to “Diocese of Metuchen” with “Disaster Relief” in the subject line and mail to: Disaster Relief Donation, Diocese of Metuchen, P.O. Box 191, Metuchen, NJ 08840-0191.

Bishop James F. Checchio asks faithful of the Diocese of Metuchen
to assist victims of Hurricane Harvey through special collection

August 31, 2017

Pope Francis sends condolences
to victims of Hurricane Harvey

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Diocese of Metuchen,

It was nearly five years ago, in October 2012, that Superstorm Sandy hit parts of our diocese and many of our people went through something of what is now being experienced by the residents of eastern and southern Texas and Louisiana. In scope and level of devastation, Hurricane Harvey is being described as a natural disaster beyond anything our nation has ever experienced. In the aftermath of Sandy, our people were able to begin to rebuild their homes and their very lives through the support of parishes and dioceses throughout the United States.

Hurricane Harvey presents us with the opportunity to show to the grieving and displaced persons in Texas and Louisiana the same compassion that was so generously shown to us. I encourage the faithful of the Diocese of Metuchen to continue to pray for those who are suffering from this storm. I also invite you to participate in a special second collection, which I have asked to be taken up in our parishes the weekend of September 16-17, or an alternate weekend determined by your pastor. Please be generous as your means allow.

If it is more convenient, you may also donate online here or write a check made payable to “Diocese of Metuchen” with “Hurricane Harvey” in the subject line and mail to: Hurricane Harvey Donation, Diocese of Metuchen, P.O. Box 191, Metuchen, NJ 08840-0191.

We will accept donations through September 30 and then will forward all monies collected to the Catholic Charities in the dioceses affected by the storm.

Thank you in advance for your concern for our brothers and sisters in great need.

Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend James F. Checchio, JCD, MBA
Bishop of Metuchen
