Two Catholic high schools in Central Jersey receive $700,000 donation to bolster STEM programs
The Diocese of Metuchen announced today that it has received a $700,000 private donation, which will be used to expand the existing STEM programs at Bishop George Ahr High School, Edison, and Immaculata High School, Somerville. It is one of the largest gifts from a single benefactor that any of the schools in the diocese have received.

Letter to the Editor: Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen committed to serving, fighting exploitation of immigrants
Recent local media reports detailed human trafficking charges brought against two men after six unauthorized migrants were found living in an unheated shed behind a poultry slaughterhouse located in Perth Amboy. City inspectors shut the business down for good due to extensive code and health violations. The displaced immigrant workers were referred to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, which provided them with food, legal support and transitional housing.

The Diocese of Metuchen recently awarded $57,500 in local grants to support food security programs in Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren counties. A total of nineteen grants were distributed during the annual “Harvest of Mercy” dinner held Oct. 20 at Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church Hall, Hamilton Street.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen officially will welcome its new spiritual leader on May 3, when Bishop-elect James F. Checchio, 50, a priest of the Diocese of Camden, is ordained and installed as the fifth Bishop of Metuchen. Most recently, he served for ten years as rector of the Pontifical North American College, the American seminary in Rome. He succeeds Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski, 75, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Metuchen was accepted by Pope Francis on March 8.
