Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski

Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski was born on July 4, 1940, in Newark, N.J. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1966. On July 8, 1997, Pope John Paul II named Msgr. Bootkoski to serve as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, where he later served as diocesan administrator, responsible for the temporary management of the archdiocese. Pope John Paull II names Bishop Bootkoski as the fourth bishop of Metuchen on January 4, 2002. His Episcopal ordination and installation was celebrated on March 19, 2002.



Bishop Vincent De Paul Breen

Bishop Vincent De Paul Breen was born Dec. 24, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 15, 1962 in Rome. In 1994, he was appointed as vicar for education for the Diocese of Brooklyn. Pope John Paul II named Bishop Breen as the third bishop of Metuchen on July 8, 1997. His Episcopal ordination and installation was celebrated on Sept. 8. Bishop Breen served as a champion of Catholic education and pro-life causes throughout his priestly life, and showed a keen desire to build bridges of understanding between the Catholic and Jewish communities.

 

Bishop Edward Thomas Hughes

Bishop Edward T. Hughes was born in Lansdowne, Pa., on Nov. 13, 1920. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Hugh Lamb in the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, May 31, 1947. Pope Paul VI appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia in 1976 and he was ordained to the episcopacy on July 21 by John Cardinal Krol. On Dec. 16, 1986, Pope John Paul II named Bishop Hughes as the second bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen. During his time as Bishop of Metuchen, Bishop Hughes dedicated more than 15 new churches and blessed numerous other facilities.

 

Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick

Cardinal Theodore Edgar McCarrick was born in New York City on July 7, 1930. He was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Francis Spellman for the Archdiocese of New York on May 31, 1958. In 1977, Pope Paul VI named Msgr. McCarrick Auxiliary Bishop of New York. Pope John Paul II appointed him to be the First Bishop of Metuchen when the diocese was established in 1981. In 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed him as the fourth Archbishop of Newark. He was installed as the Archbishop of Washington on Jan. 3, 2001. On Feb. 21, 2001, just seven weeks after he was installed as the Archbishop of Washington, Archbishop McCarrick was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II.
